SKILLSET AT UNCA STEAM STUDIO
GRADE LEVEL: Grades 5th to 12th
SkillSet is an outreach program of UNC Asheville’s STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) Studio that provides access to life-changing skills through maker-based education. We teach everything from making custom electric guitars to robotics and furniture. By teaching participants the Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math embedded in the objects they create, Skillset equips the next generation of leaders and problem solvers with the tools to make change and build the future.
SkillSet Studio Tour
SkillSet hosts 1-2 hour in-person field trips which include a tour of our nearly 12,000 sq ft. studio and a 30 minute - 1 hour “make and take” customized project.
Simple signs, stencils, or print blocks: Students design in a vector program and use the laser cutter to make their customized piece. Stencils and print blocks can be used in collaborative or individual projects back in the classroom.
Simple circuits: Students build a miniature wind turbine that can generate electricity to light an LED and learn how circuits work.
Bridge Building: Students learn basic woodworking techniques and experiment with building a bridge that holds weight.
One Session Demos
SkillSet will come to your classroom and lead one session demonstrations with woodworking equipment, soldering iron, welder, or simple robotics. These sessions will last 1 hour and include connections to curricula.
Projects can be co-created with teachers to meet specific classroom and/or school needs and will make curricular links to science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics.
