Haywood Street Fresco

The Haywood St. Fresco was painted by artist Christopher Holt in 2019 and represents the history of the Asheville community. Through art and history, explore the stories of Black Ashevillians from the past and the stories of current residents. View the Haywood St. Fresco and have your students experience where their stories and our stories meet and respond to how we can move through the current struggles of today to make racial and economic justice a reality for our city of Asheville.

Resources & Preparation

A field trip to the Haywood Street Fresco provides a multi-stage learning experience designed to engage students before, during, and after the visit. This three-hour tour educates students about the significant African-American history and cultural contributions in Asheville through visits to notable sites and murals. Pre-activity resources, aligned with education standards and supported by a comprehensive curriculum guide, prepare students to fully engage with the content. During the trip, students experience the Haywood Street Fresco firsthand, connecting its themes to local history in a way that makes the past come alive. Post-trip activities extend the impact by prompting students to reflect on what they have learned and consider how to apply this knowledge in their own lives and communities.
