About the Artist
Ginger Huebner is an artist, educator and creative facilitator with a Bachelor of Architecture and a Master of Arts in Teaching Visual Art. For over 25 years, Ginger has used the mediums of collage and chalk pastel to translate and capture artistically what often transcends expression in mere words. Ginger’s work embodies people’s hearts, their dreams, their passions in life, and the moments and individuals that define and refine them. She is the founding director of Roots + Wings School of Art and Design in Asheville (2009-2023), a dynamic and innovative art and design education program for all ages. In 2023, Ginger’s working studio was opened offering creative classes, private lessons, retreats, professional development and consulting for schools. These efforts support her former Roots + Wings mission of cultivating authentic connection through creativity in the classroom and empowering creativity in schools everywhere. Ginger offers creating and consulting with schools, administrators, teaching teams and companies empowering creativity and connection everywhere. RESIDENCY OFFERING: collaborative self-portraits
Collage, Color & Connection
k - 12th grade
Students will explore identity, personal experiences, and self-expression through collaborative self-portraits inspired by the collage work of Romare Bearden. Using found imagery, collage, and vibrant mixed media techniques, students will create meaningful works of art that celebrate their unique stories and perspectives.
Timeline
Artist Contact Hours: 1.5 hours per day for 2-3 days
Day 1: The Work of Romare Bearden
Introduce and discuss the work of Romare Bearden and his depictions of his community and identity.
Students choose a collection of images that represent aspects of their culture, their humanity, their place in this world.
Once they have 10 images they feel strongly about, they begin cutting them out carefully.
Day 2: Creating Collages
Create individual collages using the images found and cut on day 1, thinking about layers, connections, and composition.
A last layer of chalk pastel goes over the entire collage.
Share works.
After Residency:
Final collage exhibit. (Virtual exhibit / sharing options available)
Multiple classrooms viewing these pieces. All classrooms have the opportunity to discuss on their own time.
Open dialogue with all students at the school about what makes us who we are. Grow and refine ability to discuss community and inclusion; gain deeper appreciation of diversity within our community.

Residency Offering: Create + Connect Circles
a 1-hour exhale and renewal
k - 12th grade
Join Ginger for a 1-hour exhale and renewalwith your students. She will guide students through a Create + Connect Circles experience using simple tools of creativity - collage and colored pencil. This process will offer students time and space to process and explore feelings and emotions; AND can be used as a weekly practice moving forward. Each student will receive a composition notebook; and the classroom will be gifted with sets of colored pencils, magazines, composition books and glue sticks.
The Create + Connect Process can be learned through this 1 day workshop and used with students as a weekly practice to promote health and well being after artist leaves.
