Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center

Grade levels: Grades 6th to 12th

Founded in 1933 in the mountains of Western North Carolina, Black Mountain College (BMC) was an experiment in democracy and student-centered education. In its 24 years, BMC became the first college in the Southeast to integrate, a decade before Brown v. Board of Education, and was a site of liberation and self- discovery for students across the spectrum of identity and expression.

Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center will host field trips at the museum at 120 College Street in Downtown Asheville. Field trips can be customized based on student and teacher interest, and will reflect the theme of our current exhibition.

An Experiment in Community

Explore the history of Black Mountain College through our museum’s collection of artworks, photographs, books, sound installations, and more. Students will hone their visual thinking strategies, looking closely at artworks, while immersed in the story of Black Mountain College from its founding in 1933 to its closure in 1957.

A Legacy in our Backyard

Students will learn about the work of contemporary artists, reflecting on BMC’s relevance today. The philosophies of BMC such as democracy, progressive education, and experimentation will be explored through the perspective of local and international artists in conversation with historic works in our collection.

Experiential Learning

Students will participate in an activity to deepen their connection with BMC’s experiential education. Activities will reflect the themes of our current exhibition and can be adapted to various age groups.

Examples might include:

  • Textile Creation: “Fiber to Garment” display and touch station

  • Gesture drawing

  • Zine (small paper book) creation
