For some scholarships an interview may be necessary. Applicants will be contacted if an interview is needed. Scholarships will be announced at the AHS Awards Night in mid-May.

In June 2005 the Foundation awarded or renewed scholarships totaling over $72,000. The following scholarships are awarded by the Foundation:

  • The Asheville High School Memorial Scholarship is a one-time award of $500 to a student who exhibits good character and leadership skills, has maintained a good academic average and has financial need. Requires FAFSA.

  • The Dr. Keith Black Scholarship is a one-time award of $400 to a student pursuing a health-related career who has participated in at least one extra-curricular activity or works after school. *

  • The Commander Guy R. Bostain ROTC Scholarship is awarded in varying amounts to ROTC students with a history of leadership activities. More than one may be awarded.

  • The Mitchell Carlisle Memorial Scholarship is a $500 award to a student ranked in the Top 20 of the class who has been involved in athletics and participates in school activities.

  • The Deutsch Family Scholarship is a one-time award of $1000 to a student with financial need who has promoted racial, religious and cultural harmony while in school. *

  • William E. Drake Scholarships are one-time awards of $2,500 to students who plan to attend UNC Chapel Hill, are in the top 20% of their graduating class and have worked to help support themselves while in high school.

  • The Lee H. Edwards Class of '48 Scholarship is a one-time award of $1,500 to a student in the upper 30% of the class with significant financial need who will attend a NC publicly funded four-year or community college. Requires FAFSA.

  • The Lee H. Edwards Class of '51 Career & Technical Education Scholarship is a one-time award of $1000 to Asheville High graduates in the pursuit of career and technical education. The primary emphasis will be for students attending Asheville Buncombe Technical Community College, but awards can also be made for other technical schools in light of worthy requests from students.

  • The Mel Hetland Scholarship is a one-time award of $800 to a minority student who will attend a NC publicly funded college who has financial need, participates in community service and has a weighted GPA of 3.0 or better. Preference will be given to a student who is first in the family to attend college. Requires FAFSA. Two will be awarded this year. *

  • The Josten's-Kyle Radford Scholarship is a one-time award of $500 to a student involved in extra-curricular activities who also has a good academic average. *

  • The Bruce & Jean Larson Community Service Scholarship is a $600 award to one student each year and is renewable for an additional three years (subject to satisfactory performance and progress). It is awarded to a student who will attend a four - year college or university, has a 3.0 GPA or better, has financial need, has a concern for others as demonstrated by significant community service activities throughout high school and has an interest in and respect for cultural diversity as demonstrated by relevant school and community activities. Requires FAFSA. *

  • The John B. Lewis Scholarship is a one-time award of $1,000 to a student who will attend a NC publicly funded four-year or community college. The student must have a weighted, cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better; have participated in team sports at Asheville High School; and show evidence of leadership ability, community service and /or employment experience. Financial need is not a factor.

  • The McElroy Engineering Scholarship is a one-time award of $500 to a student who will attend NC State to study engineering. Need is a factor. Requires FAFSA.

  • The People Helping People Scholarship from the State Employees Credit Union Foundation is a four-year scholarship of $10,000, (subject to satisfactory performance and progress,) payable at $1,250 per semester for attendance at one of the 16 constituent campuses of the University of North Carolina. Student must have a 2.5 GPA or better, and must demonstrate leadership, excellence of character, integrity and community involvement.

  • The Seth David Shillcock Olson Scholarship is a one-time award of $500 to a student who must have a weighted, cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better; have participated in athletics; be able to document a history of employment experience and volunteer service to the community; be able to document financial need; be attending a publicly funded 4 year university; and be well rounded. Requires FAFSA. *

  • The Deborah M. Sizemore Scholarship is a one-time award of $2,500 to a student who must show evidence of participation in school or community music programs; acceptance in a music program in a two- or four- year college; and financial need. Requires FAFSA. *

  • The Sonopress Scholarship is a one-time award of $2,500 to a good student with potential whose parent or guardian works for Sonopress, LLC.*

  • Paddison Family Foundation Scholarships are four-year scholarships of $8,000, payable at $2,000 per year (subject to satisfactory performance and progress), for students who have financial need and who have demonstrated academic achievement and leadership ability. Four were awarded in 2006. Requires FAFSA.

  • The Pepsi Cola Scholarship is a one-time award of $1,000 to a student evidencing scholastic achievement and a desire to pursue higher education. *

  • The Col. Alfred I. Thomas ROTC Scholarship is a $500 award to a student who must have participated in the ROTC; be accepted and intend to enroll in a North Carolina publicly supported college; show evidence of financial need; show evidence of community service; have at least a 3.0 weighted GPA.

  • The Wachovia Minority Achievement Scholarship is a one-time award of $1000 for minority students who have financial need and who have demonstrated academic achievement and leadership ability. Requires FAFSA. *

  • The Eleanor and Charles Wykle Scholarship is a $500 award to a student of good character who has a history of service and is a good student. Need is not a factor.
*Denotes a scholarship that is funded annually at the discretion of the donor.

These scholarships require a different application (included in the application file links below) and have their own deadlines:



  • The Asheville City Schools Dependent Scholarship Program awards equal scholarships on a noncompetitive basis to all qualified applicants each year. To qualify a student must be a graduating senior at Asheville High School, be the dependent (as defined by the Internal Revenue Service) of a thirty - hour a week or more employee of the Asheville City Schools System, be accepted and intend to enroll in a two or four – year institution of higher learning in the fall following graduation and make application by the published deadline.Application Deadline: June 30, 2008.  Click HERE for Application

  • Stephens - Lee Alumni Association Scholarship Program: Open to students who are direct descendants of Stephens-Lee or Catholic Hill alumni. Deadline: May 1, 2008. Click HERE for Application

  • Brian Ling Memorial Scholarship - The Buncombe County Medical Society Alliance (BCMSA) is awarding a scholarship in memory of Dr. Brian Ling. Dr. Ling, a respected and devoted physician, served his patients with compassion, humor and interest in their lives. The BCMSA is searching for candidates who have demonstrated the characteristics he embodied, including responsibility, respect and compassion for others, dedication and honor. The scholarship, open to a graduating senior from Buncombe County, is for $500.00 (Five hundred dollars) and will be issued to a college or university of the student's choice.
