Our Grants Program, established in 1989, enables the Foundation to award grants to school personnel to fund creative and innovative projects that enhance the educational experience of our students. The program is funded by private contributions, special event proceeds and grants from the Janirve Foundation, Pepsi Cola and Progress Energy.
Applicants for Foundation grants must be employees of Asheville City Schools.
The Foundation awards two types of grants:
- Micro-Grants: Progress Energy Micro-Grants allow educators to apply for small amounts as needed during the school year to supplement their activities. Historically, teachers have dipped into their own pockets for small expenses. We anticipate that requests might include supplemental classroom materials, stipends for visiting speakers, etc. Priority is given to purchases that may be re-used from year to year. Progress Energy Micro-Grants are awarded on a competitive basis for amounts up to $200.
- The 2007 - 2008 Micro-Grant Deadlines are September 7; October 12; January 17; and February 28.
.
- Project Grants: Larger grants to fund projects that are broad in scope, benefit a large number of students and are linked to improving outcomes, in amounts from $300 to $10,000. For grants of $5,000 or more, the Foundation requires a pre-proposal. Applicants are encouraged to discuss their ideas, questions and concerns with ACSF staff before submitting their pre-proposal. A Grant Workshop is held each Spring for applicants wishing to apply for the next school year. Inexperienced grant writers are urged to attend our workshop.
