The History Project
The Asheville City Schools and the Asheville City Schools Foundation began a joint project in the spring of 2002 to research the rich history of our school system.

Established in 1887, our system is an integral part of our community and an important factor in its history. The idea for the project came from the Dialogue Group, an informal Foundation group comprised of graduates of Stephens-Lee, Lee Edwards and Asheville High Schools and other community folks interested in our school system. School Board member Roy Harris was instrumental in bringing the project to reality.
Thanks to the efforts of Duke University Summer 2002 intern Philip Kurian and UNCA Fall 2002 intern Stacy Lynch, we were able to get off to a good start. Unfortunately, due to economic circumstances, the project lost its funding.
Until funding is found we will continue cataloging information and accepting memorabilia. Our data-based information as well as our archives are available for research by contacting Charlie Glazener at 828-350-7000.
Our goals for this multi-year project are many:
To document ACS history.
To gain, sustain and garner community support for ACS.
Continuation of the healing process in ACS of the "Sense of Loss".
To create an environment for the coming together of the ACS community to celebrate our past, present and future.
To foster the continuation of the dialogue between Lee Edwards, Stephens-Lee, South French Broad, Asheville High School alumni associations and class reunions.
Creation of an ACS-History web page.
Collection of ACS memorabilia of all kind.
Creation of an ACS museum housed on the grounds of AHS or Central office.
To produce a one hour documentary for Asheville Educational Television.
To start the process for the creation of the ACS Hall Of Fame.
To collaborate with other entities on ACS history.
To create a file for Pack Memorial Library.
To chronicle the Integration Era 1965-1975.
To recognize the locations of former schools.
To involve our students in the process.
